Beko is a dialect of Tohoku region for cow. The cow is a very familiar animal in the countryside, as seen in the famous aka-beko crafts of the Fukushima region. Hanjiro-san designed the original Chichi Beko as a present for a gelato shop owned by an acquaintance.
