This hariko mask is based on the Kirinjishi Mai (Quilin-Lion Dance), a traditional event in the Tottori region. The nuke (pronounced nukay), who wears a turmeric-colored hood with eye holes, accompanies the kirinjishi and its entourage of shoujou as they dance through the town. In the old days, when alleys were much narrower than they are now, the nuke cleared the path ahead of the shoujou and kirinjishi to dance.
