This hariko mask made with washi and hemp is based on the motif of the Shojo, folkloric figures that appear during the Kirinjishi Mai (Quilin-Lion Dance), a traditional event in the Tottori region. Shojo are smiling and mysterious red-skinned, red-haired monkeys who carry red logs and gourds filled with sake and lead the kirinjishi through the town in a slow, gentle dance.
