Senmon is a technique in which a glaze is scratched off with a scriber after coating with a white glaze. The underglaze is coated in advance with local iron-containing clay (which turns brown after firing), so that the brown of the clay peeks out from the scraped lines when the pottery is fired. Tottori is famous for stargazing as the Milky Way can be seen in all the cities. The pattern is etched with smooth and steady hand, making a design which resembles a constellation, as if the stars were connected to each other.
