Japan's iconic maneki-neko, or beckoning lucky cat, rides atop a catfish. Long ago, it was believed that earthquakes were caused by the movement of giant catfish, so the two are associated in Japan. This hariko symbolizes good luck triumphing over earthquake disasters and serves as a kind of prayer that they occur no more.
