The surface of this matcha cup is decorated with a tobiganna technique. This is a technique of making a series of cuts using the cutting edge of a Japanese hand plane, called kanna in Japanese. The word tobiganna describes the way the kanna moves as if it were jumping (tobi) across the surface of the cup. The Tottori-sakyu Sand Dunes, a famous sightseeing spot in Tottori Prefecture, are covered with ripples created by the wind blowing up from the beach. The pattern on the cup is insipred by the image of wind ripples on the dunes.
