The kamado gami, whose face is blackened with soot, is the guardian deity of the furnace, the family, and agriculture. Japanese customs related to this deity vary from region to region, but in the southern part of Iwate, where this craft studio is located, its effigy is traditionally placed facing the door or outside the home to protect the family.
