This hariko mask is rooted in local Tottori folklore. The ao hanatare (literally green runny nose), is a shinto spirit performed during the Gongen festivals of the feudal era which took place at Ouchidani Shrine, in the area that is now Tottori City. Gongen festivals were part of an effort to harmonize Buddhism and local religious practice. On the day of the festival, the person performing the ao hanatare was allowed to say any bad words they wished for that day.
