The Akaoni Mask (red demon) is an original folk toy created by first-generation Yanagiya craftsman Tatsunosuke Tanaka. The design was inspired by a moment atop Mt. Kyusho when he held an onigiri made by his wife, Toshiko—an idea that unexpectedly took shape in his mind.
With a stout face, bold eyebrows, a thick beard, and sharp fangs peeking from firmly closed lips, this red oni may appear fierce at first glance. However, its slightly endearing expression gives it a unique charm, making it a cherished piece in the Yanagiya folk toy tradition.
